1. Aquarius: January 20 - February 18
Characteristics: Progressive, original, independent, humanitarian, runs from emotional expression, temperamental, uncompromising, aloof
Lucky Numbers: 4, 8, 13, 17, 22, 26
Newcastle is a definite Aquarius. Nothing says progressive and original like being the first university in the world to offer £3 drug testing kits to students to encourage better drug education and harm prevention.
Aloof and independent, BPP is a world-renowned private university specialising in law, business, finance, accountancy, and banking. Not exactly the best subjects for emotional expression...
University of Buckingham:
Another private higher education institution, Buckingham is the only university independent of direct government support in the United Kingdom and has used its independence to pioneer a distinctive approach to higher education. Total Aquarius.
2. Pisces: February 19 - March 20
Characteristics: Compassionate, artistic, intuitive, gentle, wise, musical, fearful, overly trusting, sad, desire to escape reality, can be a victim or a martyr
Lucky Numbers: 3, 7, 12, 16, 21, 25, 30, 34, 43, 52
University of the Arts London:
The alma mater of world famous creative pioneers including Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and M.I.A. and a nest of future creative talents in the making, UAL is most definitely a Pisces.
One of the highest ranked arts universities in the UK, Falmouth is known for excellence in music and art. Notable alumni include Ben Howard whose music, fittingly, is rather mournful.
Goldsmiths, University of London:
Another hive of brooding artists / art enthusiasts. Art is essentially escapism, right? James Blake (whose music is also rather mournful) went to Goldsmiths, amongst other musical and creative giants like Damon Albarn and Damien Hirst. 100% Pisces.
De Montfort University:
Featuring an annual University Dance Festival and drama studies showcase fittingly titled ‘Exit Souls, Glorious Collisions’ De Montfort has come to be an intrinsic feature in Leicester’s cultural life, and is yet another British institution renowned for excellence in the arts.
3. Aries: March 21 - April 9
Characteristics: Courageous, determined, confident, enthusiastic, optimistic, honest, passionate, impatient, moody, short-tempered, impulsive, aggressive
Lucky Numbers: 1, 9
Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent is a university determined to shine as brightly on the map of England as it’s older and better known sibling The University of Nottingham. The university can be a little short-tempered and aggressive as a result of it’s younger status, but remains optimistic and passionate about it’s students and it’s future.
Loughborough is home to some of the best sport and fitness facilities for outdoor and indoor team sports in the world, including a gym and swimming pool. Notable alumni include sporting heroes like Paula Radcliffe and cricketer Laura Marsh. Nothing says courage, determination, passion, and aggression like sports - indubitably Aries.
University of Bath
Another fine British institution which has birthed many a sporting hero like track and field athlete Marilyn Okoro and paralympic sport household name Ben Rushgrove. Ben Rushgrove won gold (1st place) in the 2009 Paralympic World Cup, and Marilyn Okoro ranked 9th in the UK for track and field in 2013. Coincidence? I think not.
University of Exeter
Famed for having one of the most attractive student bodies in the UK, Exeter has all the confidence and enthusiasm one would expect from a university with that sort of reputation. Can be very aggressive to Plymouth university whom most students view as ‘beneath’ Exeter, and a long standing sports rivalry with Loughborough means you can’t wear purple (Loughborough’s colour) on Wednesday nights (or do so at your own peril). Fiery.
4. Taurus: April 20 - May 20
Characteristics: Reliable, patient, practical, devoted, responsible, stable, stubborn, possessive, uncompromising
Lucky Numbers: 2, 4, 6, 11, 20, 29, 37, 47, 56
Nestled between dramatic mountain ranges and wild beaches battered and shaped by the tumultuous Atlantic ocean, North Wales’ Bangor University is the epitome of practicality and stability. The School of Ocean Sciences is particularly well known - but you’ve got to be pretty devoted and patient to make the trek all the way over there to study. Locals can be a bit possessive of their land, language and culture, and consequently uncompromising towards foreigners. Definite Taurus.
University of Cumbria
The University of Cumbria has it’s headquarters in Carlisle. Carlisle is in Cumbria. Cumbria is known for lots and lots of mountains (some with funny names like ‘Cat Bells’ and ‘Walla Crag’) and The Lake District; very earthy and full of walkers, mountain climbers and ramblers in practical waterproof attire. 100% Taurus.
The Bournemouth University Department of Life & Environmental sciences is made up of a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, ecologists, geographers and environmental scientists, with wide-ranging specialist interests which include sustainability, paleoecology, remote sensing, coastal and terrestrial geomorphology, and the ecology of plants and animals within terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. In a biodiversity hotspot, close to iconic environments such as the New Forest National Park, Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, Bournemouth is ideally situated to study and research life and environmental sciences. Doesn’t get more Taurus than that.
5. Gemini: May 21 - June 20
Characteristics: Gentle, affectionate, curious, adaptable, ability to learn quickly and exchange ideas, nervous, inconsistent, indecisive
Lucky Numbers: 3, 8, 12, 23
University of Birmingham
The university of Birmingham is ranked one of the highest for student satisfaction amongst all the Russell Group universities (affectionate - tick). It is also home to one of the largest research-led schools of education in the UK with a distinguished reputation for excellence (ability to learn quickly and exchange ideas - tick).
Cardiff is ranked in the top 5 for research excellence and impact, and happens to be a Russell Group university like Birmingham. A lot of people from South Wales have a very affectionate and gentle way about them (and amazing accents). Did you know that on June 5, you could see Mercury from Cardiff? 100% Gemini.
University of Warwick
Nothing says curiosity and the ability to learn quickly / exchange ideas like building a fully functional F3 racing car with potatoes for bodywork, powered by chocolate, and steered by carrots that can still tackle corners at 125 mph. That’s exactly what researchers at WMG at the University of Warwick have built - commendable use of resources.
6. Cancer: June 21 - July 22
Characteristics: Tenacious, highly imaginative, loyal, emotional, sympathetic, persuasive, moody, pessimistic, suspicious, manipulative, insecure
Lucky Numbers: 2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25
University for the Creative Arts
Freedom, Experimentation, Collaboration, Criticism and Rigour - these are the five key ideas under which UCA operates. UCA may feel slightly insecure in the face of other artistic university giants (e.g. Goldsmiths) but it has earned its place as one of the UK’s leading creative universities. Did you know that UCA students recently collaborated with Nescafe Azera to design a range of limited edition coffee tins? Highly imaginative.
University of St Andrews
St Andrews boasts 2 members of the royal family as alumni. It is one of the UK’s most tenacious universities, holding on to a prestigious legacy that stems back to the dawn of the middle ages. St Andrews is situated in Fife, known for lots of rain and temperatures that rarely ever exceed 18°c in the summer months. Moody.
London Metropolitan’s Daniel Libeskind Graduate Centre is an angular, metallic structure resembling something that might’ve crash-landed from a distant galaxy. Highly imaginative. With 14,085 total students in attendance, it is clearly a very persuasive institution. Students from LSE and King’s College London have looked unfavorably at London Met in the past so it can be a little moody and insecure sometimes.
Did you know that Lancaster University’s Pendle college is named after the infamous haunt of witches in medieval folklore? The college’s logo is a witch silhouetted against a yellow moon. How very moody and suspicious.
7. Leo: July 23 - August 22
Characteristics: Creative, passionate, generous, warm-hearted, cheerful, humorous, arrogant, stubborn, self-centered, lazy, inflexible
Lucky Numbers: 1, 4, 10, 13, 19, 22
University of Leeds
People from the North are known for being slightly more warm-hearted, cheerful and humorous, than their southern counterparts, and these traits have seeped into university life at Leeds. Leeds university’s passion can sometimes extend to non-curricular related exploits like the infamous Otley Run pub crawl which has left many a student feeling lazy and inflexible the next day (or extremely arrogant if successful.)
University of Manchester
Poised nobly atop the University of Manchester coat of arms is a majestic lion. In a ribbon beneath that, the words ‘Arduus ad Solem’ which means ‘striving towards the sun’. Can’t really get more Leo than that.
If you’ve ever been to Liverpool, you’ll know just how cheerful and warm-hearted the people can be. People in attendance at the university may find that some local phenomena (e.g. scouse-brows, that lovely accent) are contagious. But be warned - hell hath no fury like a scouser scorned.
8. Virgo: August 23 - September 22
Characteristics: Loyal, analytical, kind, hardworking, practical, shyness, worrying, overly critical of self and others, all work and no play
Lucky Numbers: 5, 14, 23, 32, 41, 50
Bristol is ranked in the top 5 institutions in the UK for its research according to the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) study. They achieved this through analysis and hard work. Anyone who goes there will tell you that you have got to be pretty hardworking and practical to survive challenging assessments and exams which can be very worrying for students. It is easy to fall into an all work and no play mentality as a result of the stress. Bristol students can be overly critical of the University of the West of England even though it is a decent uni.
University of Cambridge
Cambridge is well known for being one of the world's top universities. They sometimes worry about how they compare to Oxford University, who generally rank a little higher than they do in league tables. This has led them to be overly critical of themselves and other universities, and students do have a reputation for being all work and no play.
9. Libra: September 23 - October 22
Characteristics: Cooperative, diplomatic, gracious, fair-minded, social, indecisive, avoids confrontations, will carry a grudge, self-pity
Lucky Numbers: 6, 15, 24, 33, 42, 51, 60
LSE have their own foreign policy think tank called LSE IDEAS. They connect academic knowledge of diplomacy and strategy with the people who use it through projects, publications, events, and executive education in efforts to build a more fair-minded society. LSE students tend to be cooperative and diplomatic and avoid confrontations with rival university King’s College London (and all other London universities). Definite Libra.
Did you know that 5 former Sheffield University staff and alumni are Nobel Prize winners? How’s that for diplomacy and fair-mindedness? Sheffield is also one of the greenest cities in England, located only 7 miles away from the Peak District National Park - the air there must be quite nice. Libra through and through.
SOAS is the only higher education institution in the UK specialising in the study and research of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Diplomatic, no?. It started in 1916 as just the School of Oriental Studies, but couldn’t really make up its mind about whether it should also encompass studies into Africa and the Middle East so it decided to become The School of Oriental and African Studies. How indecisive (but in a good way).
10. Scorpio: October 23 - November 21
Characteristics: Resourceful, brave, passionate, stubborn, a true friend, distrusting, jealous, secretive, violent
Lucky Numbers: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90
University of Oxford
Oxford is viewed as one of, if not the best university in the world. As a result of its lofty status, it can be slightly distrusting of other universities and must put on a brave face because it’s lonely at the top. Oxford are jealous of Cambridge who beat them in the most recent of their annual boat races, and have a history of accommodating secretive and violent societies e.g. The Bullingdon Club.
University of Edinburgh
Did you know that the University of Edinburgh is home to the UK’s oldest student newspaper, The Student, which was started in 1887 by Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Edinburgh is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world; it must be pretty stubborn and resourceful to have stuck around as long as this!
11. Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21
Characteristics: Generous, idealistic, great sense of humor, promises more than can deliver, very impatient, will say anything no matter how undiplomatic
Lucky Numbers: 3, 12, 21, 30
The Open University is known for distance learning and maintains its status as one of the biggest universities in the UK for undergraduate education. It’s catchphrase is ‘Realise Your Potential’ - how idealistic!
University of Southampton

12. Capricorn: December 22 - January 19
Characteristics: Responsible, disciplined, self-control, good managers, know-it-all, unforgiving, condescending, expecting the worst
Lucky Numbers: 1, 4, 8, 10, 13, 17, 19, 22, 26
UCL students expect the worst from oil industry giants Shell and BP - so they got naked and covered themselves in oil to protest UCL’s relationship with these oil industry household names last year to promote environmental responsibility. They clearly have the best interests of the Earth in mind. UCL is ranked 7th best university in the world - it takes a lot of discipline and good management to sustain such a lofty title, but there might be some condescension and a couple of know-it-alls skulking around as a result.
Durham is known for being especially scenic and beautiful in the winter months, typically between December 22 and January 19. Students are known for discipline and responsibility - necessary traits when you’re attending one of the top 10 universities in the world. Can sometimes be know-it-alls, unfortunately.
