This module followed on from Life Insurance A which gave you an grounding in the basic calculations/techniques used within Life Insurance.

Life Insurance B really brought the mathematics alive for me as for one of the first times within my course I could really imagine actually using these skills in a real office environment. We learnt how to calculate premiums, how much a company needs to reserve in order to ensure they can cover their future liabilities, how marketable certain products would really be to a prospective client etc.

As well as finding the course content particularly interesting, I also really enjoyed the way in which it was taught. Our lecturer tried to make both lectures and tutorials as interactive as possible, which made me keep on top of all the work. She was very approachable and if you made a mistake she had a really gentle manner so you never felt embarrassed and always came away feeling you'd learnt something.

I would really recommend this course as it was not only practical but very interesting.

This course has been very interesting and offered an insight into different maths. It has covered a wide range of topics. There is a lot in the course content but tutorials are very helpful. It could be improved by giving more feedback on the project.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary collaborative group of 6-7, a week long project ensued in an effort to provide an innovative solution to a project brief. The tight deadline and group nature f the work encourages great organisational ability as well as critical communication skills. Presentations of the proposed solutions were offered to not just the lecturers leading the class, but also engineers from local projects and national engineering companies. This is a crucial experience that provides a wide array of benefits.

In the first year of my degree we covered many maths and statistics modules, a lot of which continued on from the school syllabus. This allowed for an easy progression into university life. These subjects gave us a good base knowledge in order to tackle the more complex actuarial subjects.

The level of work required took a significant jump up heading into second year and then gradually increased throughout the rest of my time at university.

The MSAS course provides great flexibility within the Maths department as if you find that you are not enjoying the more statistical elements of the course you're able to change to pure maths at the end of your second year. Likewise, if you find you're performing well you may wish to change to the pure Actuarial Science degree allowing you to really focus on an insurance career.

Within the both the Actuarial and MSAS course there is the opportunity to obtain exemptions from the professional actuarial exams which stand you in great stead if this is the route you wish to follow.

Joe Wells and the newly lecturing Manuel Marekk were two of the best lecturers for their explanations of things. I say this mostly because the course was mathematical and yet I got 69% as my grade for the module. Everything was so well explained that I managed to do well. At first Joe is quite scary but in the end you realise how nice a guy he is. Manuel was one of the friendliest lecturers you could ever meet.

The course content was really nice too! Learning Turing Machines builds up the foundations of any good computer scientist and it's nice to understand as well.

The course is not too difficult, you have to work hard but if you do it you will obtain good results. The teaching is great, all the professors are very kind and extremely patient. They are really proactive to help students and solve questions or problems related to the subject. The coursework usually do not carry any mark, but they are quite useful in order to go deeper in some topics of the subjects, because usually they are about something that can not be asked on exam. The exams are easy if you have studied and cover all the topics for each subject. They do not use to include theory, only solve problems. The master is really interesting and you will get a clear knowledge of some structural behaviour, however it does not go too deep. It is a good experience and quite recommendable. You will get a theoretical and practical knowledge,as well as good contacts because the people is amazing. Mostly of the students are internationals, so the environment is very friendly.

This degree is great for students with a broad interest in business. in years 1 and 2, a vast range of business topics from enterprise to accounting are covered. In year 3 you get to spend a year studying abroad which is fantastic. Year 3 was my best year and was by far the most enjoyable, but Madrid had that effect! The teaching is overall great, very high standards of teaching with great support from most. The assessments are varied and a lot of group work in the beginning but by year 4 this becomes non-existent.Overall, I've really enjoyed my time at Heriot Watt. There's fun events, great career and academic support and great quality of teaching. The year abroad made this degree for me!

The MA (Hons) Business Management with Business Law Degree at Heriot-Watt University provides students with a very academic yet practical understanding of the modern consumer world. Not only does it provide students with a tight grass on the way in which the markets in various industries work it also provides a clear and concise understanding of how the laws surrounding the business world impacts on how it operates. All modules studied provide different viewpoints of the business world and link together for students to have a real "360" understanding of the industry which they are studying and how it connects to course content. The structure of each of my modules is very straight forward and delivered extremely effectively and efficiently. Students know what they should be studying and exactly where they are at in the course not only in regards to teaching, but their understanding also. The forms of assessment vary from course to course, however any assessment I have undertaken has been very fair and representative to the module and exactly what is being assessed. I am currently in third year, and can safely say I have thoroughly enjoyed my university experience as it stands. The teaching staff at Heriot-Watt University have been excellent. Not only have the broken down the complexity of the course so that it is completely digestible - they are extremely helpful and friendly and have always been at hand when needed.
