With over 60,000 students, Sheffield has loads of dessert choices. Especially at this time of year when the exam pressures hit, all we want is a doughnut.
When we just want to immerse ourselves in sugar, carbs, and deliciousness in an attempt to escape impending deadlines, it can be hard to decide where to go. So I’ve put together a list of my fave dessert places.
Eve Kitchen, Sharrow Vale Road
Fresh, hand-made doughnuts whipped up in their kitchen every single day, waiting to be scoffed down in this pretty little café. The entire place smells divine, and it’s right near the Botanical Gardens if you want to take a doughnut away with a coffee and relax in nature.
The Steam Yard, Division Street
If you want something different, go here - it’s individual AF with self-made dessert recipes under cute quirky names such as ‘Apple Bumble’. And their speciality? S’mores doughnuts. Served piping hot. Need I say more?
Lucky Fox, Division Street
Just LOOK at those milkshakes - known as ‘Lucky Shakes’. Complete with an extremely necessary side-pretzel.
Cocoa Wonderland, Ecclesall Road
Maybe Sheffield’s windy weather will drive you to fancy a hot chocolate instead of an ice-cold milkshake. After all, it snowed in April this year. These ones are so loaded with marshmallows and brownie pieces it counts as a full-blown dessert, and to top it all off the place itself is as cosy as your grandma’s house.
Joni, South Road
Craving doughnuts, macaroons, or the two together!? This is the place for you. And the blueberry ones count as a portion of fruit, right?
Cake ‘R’ Us, London Road
I once ordered from here on Deliveroo as I couldn’t be bothered to leave my flat. If you’re a fan of whipped cream and cold cakes, you’ll love this place. The Strawberries and Cream Sweet Pancakes and the Oreo Chocolate Cake are particular favourites.
Sundaes Gelato, West Street
Located in one of the city’s central streets, Gelato is the ideal place to meet up with mates on a break from the library and collectively drown your sorrows in dessert. They do waffles, crêpes, sundaes, and ice-cream in heaps of flavours, so there really is something for everyone.
Urban Quarter, Kelham Island
Tucked away in the hipster hub of the city, Urban Quarter is famous for it’s burgers, but little do many people know that they serve up a cracking doughnut. Their milkshakes aren’t half bad, either.
The Cabin, The Moor
The Cabin uses eco-friendly packaging, local produce and ethically-sourced coffee, so you can feel less guilty about taking the time out of studying to inhale that pancake stack with extra toppings.
Alyssum, Crookesmoor
In Greek, Alyssum means curing madness. That’s exactly what these pancakes will do when you’re having your fifth breakdown of the week. The café itself is instagrammable, too - a quaint, fairy-lit room of dreams.
These are just a handful of the places Sheffield has to offer for dessert, but there are many, many more - if you study in this city, there’s simply no excuse not to take a deep breath, stand up, go for a walk, and scoff a doughnut to feel better about the pressures of being at uni. Or any time of year. Because there’s never a reason to say no to dessert.
