We've rounded up the best video games for revision procrastination. Although obviously we don't condone swapping essays for post-apocalypse shoot-outs.

Here are the best video games for revision procrastination! Before anyone starts yelling in a *pedantic person voice* that these games have ‘all been out for ages’, let me clarify that this isn’t an article for seasoned, self-professed ‘gamers’. This is an article for those of you who haven’t really played games since you accidentally sat on your Nintendo DS in 2008, have a spare console knocking about and seven exams to revise for. But, at the same time, several of my choices are also absolute classics that even the most fanatic fan would love to revisit. Also, please take breaks when you're gaming, we'll be very upset if we hear any of you have overdone it and injured yourselves.

Fallout: New Vegas - PS3, Xbox 360

the best video games for revision procrastination - fallout

With the current threat of nuclear war hanging over the world, what better way to distract yourself than with an open-world post-nuclear war game? Set in 2281, Fallout New Vegas is the 4th installment of the Fallout series, and it’s arguably the best of all. There are robots, warring factions, excellent casinos, music from the 40’s and 50’s, mutated animals and a bunch of people dressed like Romans to annoy. And I do love a game where you can completely customise the playable character - gender, race and all. If you’d like to spend less time killing things and more time with a dog building elaborate wasteland hamlets, then try Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One) - but the story simply isn’t as good.

Top time wasting things to do:

  • Gamble (and learn Caravan)
  • Take on baddies to the tune of Billie Holiday
  • Take out that exam stress on a collection of hideously deformed insects
  • Stroll aimlessly around Gomorrah

The Last Of Us - PS3, PS4 (Remastered)

the best video games for revision procrastination - the last of us

If you keep falling asleep all the time when you’re supposed to be revising, then this game should keep you from having a restful night undisturbed by nightmares about zombies for a few days. The Last of Us is both visually stunning (get your hands on the remastered version for the best graphics) and utterly terrifying. The ‘clickers’ alone are enough to make you want to sleep with the lights on for at least a month. It’s also a game that will tug at your heartstrings as you chaperone Ellie through this post-apocalyptic zombie nightmare.

Top time wasting things to do:

  • Keep an eye out for giraffes
  • Look for other Naughty Dog easter eggs
  • Throw bricks at people

Procrastination rating: 7/10

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - PS3, PS4 (Remastered)

the best video games for revision procrastination - uncharted 2

Right from the off, as you find yourself as Drake, hanging off a train that’s hanging off a mountainside, Uncharted 2 is a tense, action packed thriller. It’s linear style means it’s tempting to rush through the game as fast as possible, but try and savour the cinematic graphics of the game. If you’ve got time, then feel free to plough through the whole series of games from start to finish (Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (PS4) is apparently brilliant), but choose Uncharted 2 If you want a classic game, perfectly executed with lots of lovely shooting.

Top time wasting things to do:

  • See how many henchmen you can take down in sneak mode
  • Make the most of multiplayer mode
  • Collect all those weird trophies

Procrastination rating: 8/10

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One (Remastered)

the best video games for revision procrastination - skyrim

If you’re a fan of fancy outfits, old-school medieval weapons and having an entire village chase and murder you for punching a chicken, then this open-world fantasy game is for you. In Skyrim, you’ll be fighting dragons, destroying bandits and using magic to quash vampires. Also, the playable characters are completely customisable, so if you want to be a talking lesbian cat who gets racially abused by every other character, you can be. Look out for all the weird glitches though, from people walking in the air 10 foot above you to dead-end quests.

Top time wasting things to do:

  • Put a defeated enemy into a lumber mill
  • Go mining for literally hours (don’t forget a pick axe)
  • Climb to the top of the highest mountain and fling yourself off
  • Fill your house with cheese

Procrastination rating: 10/10

Firewatch - PS4, Xbox One

the best video games for revision procrastination - firewatch

Essentially, if you quite fancy yourself as a bit of a Ron Swanson, wandering the National Parks and protecting it from fire, then play Firewatch. With beautiful graphics and a storyline that’s all about loneliness, loss and pain, this is about as far as you can get from the classic shooter blockbusters.

Top time wasting things to do:

  • Just look at how damn beautiful everything is

Procrastination rating: 7/10
