If you and your girlfriend are celebrating Valentine's Day this year, here’s our guide to some relatively cheap, non-cheesy gifts she will hopefully actually like... (Ok some are a little cheesy...)

First of all, if you clicked this article in a panic - stop panicking! A lot of the fuss around V-Day is a myth. Most women don’t turn into rose-and-chocolate-crazed fire-breathing dragons in early February, and the assumption that they do is pretty annoying. However, people are wrong when they say V-day was invented by a greetings card conglomerate (although many of the traditions were). Valentine’s Day actually has a really long and (relatively) interesting history - which you can read about here if you've got some time to kill.

What I Love About Us Book - £7.95

Ok so this one’s pretty mushy, and takes some work. It’s perfect for anyone that wants to do something a bit more sentimental this year, but the idea of writing a love letter or poem makes them squirm. The book basically gives suggestions, and you fill in the gaps. For Example, “I love dreaming about _________ with you” - for those not ready for “raising a family” try “going to the beach” or “eating tacos” - see? It’s so versatile!

Peachy Card- £3.00

Valentine’s Day cards are probably more important than a gift - especially for those on a budget. This cute peach card is perfect for those who don’t want an epic poem written by the people who work at Clintons. It’s from SkinnyDip - a website that is also worth a look for cute little gifts. They do lots of things with emblems and motifs, so if you happen to know your girlfriend likes pineapples, or shells, or lobsters, or peaches, you can have a browse and find them something else with a similar design.

Magical All-Suiting Lipstick - £19

Can you remember what makeup she wears? Buying makeup is admittedly a minefield, but if you know there’s something she loves but only wears on special occasions, it makes for a great gift because it shows you thought into it. Also, if she wears red lipstick (IF- make sure she definitely does!), then this FENTY beauty red lipstick is great- it’s main selling point is that it suits all skin tones, so you really can’t go wrong (bonus points if bae loves Rihanna).

Dainty Necklace - £15

Jewellery might be a little cliche, but still makes for a nice gift. However, don’t think that you’ve got to go to proper jewellers and fork out a tonne of money for gold and diamonds. If you see her wearing jewellery a lot, you might get a sense of her personal style, but if not, something cute and delicate like this Etsy necklace is a good gift for most people- as it’s more about the sentiment than whether it suits their style. Etsy is a great place to look for things that are a little bit unique but won’t break the bank. However, jewellery ordered online often just comes in an envelope, so a tip would be to buy a super cheap presentation box (like this one) to make your gift that bit more special.

Lobster Necklace - £14.50

Another budget but adorable jewellery option- this time with a FRIENDS reference thrown in as a bonus…

Tickets - Variable

It’s often much nicer to spend money on an experience rather than an item. This doesn’t mean that you have to fork out for tickets to Beyonce or the Book of Mormon, maybe they like a smaller band or comedian that you can get tickets for, or perhaps look at getting tickets to a comedy night (we highly recommend this one, tickets from £10!) or Jazz club. Prices are super inflated on Valentine's Day, so maybe cook a nice meal at home on actual Valentine's Day, and go out the following week- when prices are back to normal!

Here are some other cheap Valentine’s Day gifts to consider:

  • Visit a museum. Pack sandwiches and biscuits and stare at art together in true Ferris Bueller’s Day Off style.

  • Take a day trip to somewhere you’ve never been, and go exploring. Works best if expectations of your destination are low to start with.

  • Have an intentionally retro date in an Arcade. Slush Puppies, air hockey and those crappy hunting games.

  • Visit a city farm and point at sheep together.

  • Take her to Greggs.

Remember, for those looking for cheap Valentine’s Day gifts on a budget, the thought really is what counts, so start thinking early! Don't be afraid to be creative or get a bit mushy - Valentine's Day is by definition a bit cringe, so why not just embrace it?
