Make summer 2016 your best one yet!

How does one define ‘perfect’? According to Google, 'perfect' is having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics, and being as good as it is possible to be. Read on for some suggestions on all the elements you might want to include to make sure you have the best student summer possible!

1. Rest and Relax

This may seem like a no-brainer, but in this age of 24-hour everything and the cult of constant social connectivity, it can be difficult to truly unwind and relax. Whether you’ve just finished your dissertation, exams, or both - you deserve a break, so make sure you give yourself one. Put on some music and feel the grass between your toes; sit in silent contemplation or go for a long walk. Let your mind float downstream…

2. Visit Friends

One of the great things about university is meeting and connecting with people you may not have otherwise had the chance to know. Keep your term-time friendships alive and hang out with your uni mates wherever in the country they might be - the accommodation is free, and it’s the perfect opportunity to explore parts of the country that you may not have otherwise thought of visiting. Don’t forget to reconnect with your friends from back home too; swapping stories about your different uni’s and who got up to what over a few drinks spells hours and hours of fun!

3. Enjoy Being Outside

If you’ve ever taken the time to look out of your window on any coach/train/car journey, you might have noticed that there are some truly beautiful stretches of land on this little island we inhabit. Weather permitting, take the time to enjoy being outside and marvel at the wonders of nature:

  • Festivals: What better way to enjoy the great outdoors than with thousands of other like-minded people and a live soundtrack? Pack your wellies, pour some drinks and make the most of festival season!

  • Camping: Recreate the festival experience (minus the overflowing portaloos and mud) with your nearest and dearest as near or far from home as you wish - there are hundreds of mainland and seaside campsites waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

  • Picnics/Barbeques: Food, friends or family, and fun in the sun - need I say more?

  • Day Trips: Whether it’s a trip to the zoo, amusement park, or the beach - do not underestimate just how fun it can be to pack up your things and go somewhere for the day.

  • Holidays: Look a little further afield for guaranteed sunshine and new exotic landscapes to explore. Worried about the cost of booking flights? Fill out a simple survey and get a £30 voucher to use on flights at StudentUniverse for free!

4. Say ‘Yes’

The older we get, the more difficult it is to do things on the spur of the moment. Give saying ‘yes’ wherever and whenever you can a try this summer (within reason, ofcourse…)  and see what you end up getting up to - you never know what you could be missing out on by saying no all the time. (If you haven’t watched ‘Yes Man’ already, you should.)

5. Do Some Studying

Doing more uni work might be the last thing on your mind at the moment, but getting a head start on your reading could save you a lot of stress come September. If you don’t get round to doing some reading, at least make sure you have some idea what your course and lecture structure will be!

6. Spend Time With Family

Once university is done and life in the ‘real’ world beckons, you’ll probably find that the amount of time you’re able to spend with your family will decrease very significantly. Put your differences aside and enjoy as much time together as possible.

7. Earn Some Cash

Summer is the perfect time to earn some money - the student loan is all gone and you need to be able to pay for all the fun summery things you want to get up to! Check out this article on the best summer jobs for students for some work inspiration.

8. Take Care of Yourself

If all those late night takeaways, pizzas, and alcoholic concoctions haven’t caught up to you yet, they will soon. Summer is the perfect time to treat your body to a little TLC - why not make some delicious instagram-worthy meals or smoothies and go for a run every once in awhile?

9. Make a List

Making a summer bucket list is a great way to ensure that no day is unaccounted for. Whether you’ve got a few little things that you keep meaning to do but never get round to, or big things you’d absolutely love to do (e.g. bungee jumping, skydiving, abseiling) - put them all down on paper and try tick a few off before September!
