Happy dogs and a police officer hugging a protester: We've got something to make everyone smile.

It's International Day of Happiness today so we’ve been reflecting on what makes us smile. From interspecies friendships to Daisy the dog’s amazing last days, we’ve hunted down stories to melt even the likes of Cruella Devil’s ice-cold heart.

Child writes a letter to Obama offering to take in Syrian Refugee

After seeing the heart-wrenching photo of a little Syrian boy in the back of an ambulance, covered in dust and blood after his house had been bombed, six-year-old Alex Scarsdale from New York wrote to Obama (who was President at the time). The letter read:

Dear President Obama,

Remember the boy who was picked up by the ambulance in Syria? Can you please go get him and bring him to park in the driveway or on the street and we’ll be waiting for you guys with flags and flowers and balloons. We will give him a family and he will be our brother. Catherine, my little sister will be collecting butterflies and fireflies for him. In my school I have a friend from Syria, Omar, and I will introduce him to Omar and we can all play together. We can invite him to birthday parties and he will teach us another language. We will teach him English too, just like we taught my friend Auoto from Japan. Please tell him that his brother will be Alex who is a very kind boy, just like him. Since he won’t bring toys and doesn’t have toys Catherine will share her big blue stripy white bunny.

Obama said in a speech that we should all learn from Alex. I’m not crying, I just have something in my eye…

A smiling dog because smiling dogs make EVERYONE happy

I dare you to try not to smile back at this dog. Happy humans are great and all but happy dogs? They’re what make the world go round.

Interspecies friendships

Interspecies friendships are enough to make anyone smile. Especially this cute image of a cat who loves its lizard-thing. Lizards don’t express emotions the same way we do but I’m sure the feelings mutual.

A man gives up chance to win triathlon to help brother over the finish line

Alistair Brownlee gave up on his chance to win the World Triathlon Series in Mexico so he could help his exhausted brother over the finish line. Alistair had been running comfortably in third place but when he saw his brother, Jonny, buckle, he came straight to his aid and virtually carried him across the finish line.

Daisy the Pit Bull's Happy Last Days

Okay, so this one’s semi-heartbreaking but we have to remember the positives. Daisy the Pit Bull was a rescue dog. Pit Bulls have a bad rep but it’s important to remember that they’re an extremely loyal breed so if they’re brought up in an extremely bad way then they will do bad things. If they’re brought up the way they should be, then you might notice that they have a reputation that they don’t deserve.

Daisy the dog was adopted and given the best last few days of her life and that’s what she deserved. The last tweet from Daisy’s account reads: "It’s time for me to go but don’t be sad. I’m gonna run fast again and play with every dog that ever was. Thank you for being my friend". Check out Daisy's twitter to see her happy final days and some more awesome photos of her in her favourite sunglasses: daisyjdog.
