Goodricke College

It is in a quiet location so noise is usually due to students passing by, but even then it's not enough to complain about. Easy to get into town because bus stop is minutes away. It is only a 20 minutes walk to my department which is nice in the morning because it allows me to wake up properly before i get to my lecture. It is a bit lacking in the social side because there are not many activities or societies going on on east campus.

Shared-bathroom and self-catering in one of the Goodricke houses (in newer acommodation than was provided by Hes West) was comparatively good value for money when I was in one of her houses in 2016-17. It was quite a friendly, college with different things going on during the week and no major clichés associated with it. I came to quite like the separation from Hes West where my course was based. Especially now there are more facilities on East campus, I'd recommend it - although it has probably become fast too expensive for what it is by now!

Kenneth Dixon Block in Goodricke is known for its enormous kitchens with dual facilities spread across 12 residents per flat. Each kitchen has two of everything - hobs, ovens, microwaves, sinks, kettles and fridges, so there’s less arguing over shared space. Rooms are small, but that is due to the ensuite facilities in some rooms. The rooms themselves have a huge number of plugs, especially useful if you have lots of electronics (see: gamer), but the wardrobes are a bit small. Also, if you are on the ground floor, the windows don’t fully open for security purposes. The worst part are the single beds - usually unsupportive, a thick mattress topper is a must. If you study on the East campus, it’s perfect. If you study on the West campus, it’s very easily accessible by the free shuttle bus between campuses. A newly opened Nisa general store and hairdresser has opened nearby, and there are a few pubs within walking distance if you want to enjoy a dinner out with mates.

Rooms are quite small in general and unequal across all the blocks. Bathrooms in shared halls are quite spacious, however, if you run out of toiletroll, it takes a while for staff to replenish. The atmosphere of the college is quite dead overall. If you’re looking for more life, I’d look to Langwith college or stick to a college on Hes West.

The price you pay is alright for what you get, maybe a bit expensive. The facilities were good and always clean, nice building and room, there were sometimes free events and trips and a lot of free food. The way of dealing with complaints about neighbours was really poor however which made my experience bad, and felt like i was paying a lot to hardly ever get any sleep due to loud music in the flat next door.

The facilities of my halls were good, the location was good and I had no complaints about any of that. The price was alright, a bit expensive but the building was nice and clean, good facilities and free day trips and events sometimes. The way of dealing with complaints was poor however and my experience was bad because of this. The flat next door played music very loud 24/7 so I never got any sleep, despite my numerous complaints nothing was ever done. My flat also had a lot of arguments and the attempt at resolving them was alright but not really great. I suppose you just have to depend on luck and hope you’ve got good neighbours and you’ll have a great time, if not it’ll be stressfull.

The college system at York is a great way to meet people and make friends, as each college has there own sports teams and social events. Goodricke has 2 main common rooms to organise social events, and each flat has a large kitchen great for socialising with flat mates. I had a shared bedroom, which had loads of space, as well as an ensuite. If you are coming to uni with someone you know really well (e.g. A twin), it would be the perfect room to save money on rent for the first year as all other rooms are far more expensive and most not as new/ nice as those in Goodricke.

The location is perfect for those who prefer a quieter environment; it is very clean and well-managed.

Very clean and modern with very limited wear and tear. It is a good price, one of the cheapest while also being one of the newest halls of residence. It is also right next to the departments on Heslington east.

Quality of accomodation was fantastic - repairs were quick, cleaning was thorough, everything was comfortable and well placed. However, the east campus is isolated and getting to down is difficult, with irregular £2 buses or a 40+min walk the only options. Only 1 bar on the campus and no convenient stores (tho this might change soon). Accomodation is also very expensive considering the poor location and room size. Internet was subject to regular dropouts, speed loss and many many reconnects, always when you're trying to get work done!

Excellent location for those with their department located on the Heslington East campus (maximum 3 minute walk from any of the Heslington East departments, a 5 minute bus journey to the main campus). Although Goodricke is quite pricey (this year the price is £140 per week for ensuite, a £5 per week increase from last year. The rooms themselves are excellent. Fairly big space although the bathroom is quite small. The kitchen is sizeable and has plenty of space. My one criticism is that laundry is very expensive at £4.50 for an economy wash and dry, and the machines often don't work, with little to no customer service for this. All in all, Goodricke is a pretty excellent college to be in with regular social events in the nucleus, occasional free barbecues, curry nights, and a small yearly music event.

Location was right next to my lectures so very convienient. The room was okay and en suite was good. Some of the College free events were good such as the free food.

Goodricke is modern and my room was spacious with two windows. However, some of the rooms were much less spacious and abbot dingy. The kitchen was good size, with enough storage for everything as well as seating. The only down side to this was that there was no living area so that ended up being my room! Overall I really enjoyed my experience in Goodricke.
