The University of Edinburgh is gorgeous, lovely old buildings and great atmosphere in and around campus. The staff are all friendly and experienced in their fields. Cost of living can be pricey but there are plenty of cheap bars and places to eat.

Inclusivity is a slight issue as there is a clear class divide, however, as you enter 3rd/4th year this is no longer an issue.

Councillors on campus are great and can offer up to 8 weeks counselling for students.

The campus is in a great location, very near to the main city so there is everything you want. Aswell, the halls are very near to each other which makes everything very sociable and convenient! The cafeteria food is great however can get a bit boring after a while.

MA (Hons) Sociology

This degree is very interesting. However, in the first and second year there is very limited contact hours. That means that much of the course is self-study. Not only does that make it difficult for motivation but it also limits growth because there is limited feeddback.
There are only two lectures and one tutorial a week which gives less than three total hours of contact in a week.
There were three assessments per semester in general. Which is adequate, yet there should be smaller assignments where we can get more feedback.

BSc (Hons) Chemistry

The course (following the Scottish system) is 4 years long and to put this into context, I am currently finishing my second year at Edinburgh University.
The first two years of the course don't count towards the final degree result, and the course differs from most other universities in that you can choose different modules from completely different degree areas as well as your own to do alongside your degree. For example, I did French and Architectural History in first year, alongside Maths for Chemistry (as well as my degree).

My degree content includes many areas of chemistry and physics, in particular the areas in which the two subjects overlap. The content is challenging but very interesting and the course is not offered by very many universities. I am really enjoying the course so far.

I liked the course very much as the lecturer has made a lot of effort to deliver the material in a most comprehensive way. The lectures were engaging as there was a lot of quizes, problems etc. The questions often appeared to be very challenging.

The Senior Honours Project has been one of the highlights of my degree programme. It was a Musical Acoustics project on pipe organs, and it showed me the diversity of applications of Physics. I thoroughly enjoyed the experimental part of the project and my enthusiasm was visible to anyone who would listen to me talk about it!

We were required to write a report and create a poster for the assessment of the project, both of which I also greatly enjoyed. It gave an insight into the process behind published papers, with a topic that I was keen to learn more about.

The course focused on Chemistry was overall great. The teaching was very good, although some of the professor may try to be more interactive when teaching the material. The material itself is challenging, but interesting and not too difficult. There is support from the staff when struggling, addittional revision sessions and online materials to help with difficult topics. The staff is knowledgeable and approachable.
