Nightlife

From bars to bistros, nightclubs to cosy pubs, there’s always a good night out to be had in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire. The Students’ Union run their own student night at MooMoo Clubrooms in Cheltenham, welcoming top DJ talent.

If you prefer live music, venues such as Café Rene in Gloucester and the Frog in Fiddle in Cheltenham host a diverse range of acts. And that’s in addition to the 45 festivals a year in the area, including world-famous events celebrating jazz, science, literature and music.

Halls of Residence

All of our campuses have their own halls of residence. Also, our brand new Pittville Student Village in Cheltenham offers nearly 800 rooms across cluster flats, townhouses and studios. It has its own gym, refectory, faith space and shop, and is connected to all campuses by the university bus.

Opening September 2018, the Blackfriars Residences, managed in partnership with Cityheart, will provide almost 300 rooms in the middle of bustling Gloucester, just a short walk from the historic docks and regenerated Gloucester Quays.

Location

Our Francis Close Hall campus is just 10 minutes’ walk from Cheltenham town centre and 20 minutes’ walk from Pittville Student Village. Park campus is 25 minutes from the town centre and 20 minutes from Cheltenham Spa station. Close to Francis Close Hall, the Brewery Quarter houses a cinema, gym, restaurants, indoor golf and bowling alley. Park is just a short walk from the cultural hub of the Montpellier area with its boutiques and bars as well as a host of famous literature, jazz and food festivals.

Oxstalls is 20 minutes’ walk from Gloucester city centre and railway station, and 30 minutes from Gloucester Quays, historic docks that have been regenerated with an outlet shopping centre, cinema, bars and restaurants.

CLubs and societies

Our Students’ Union has over 45 sports clubs, including everything from football, rugby and rowing through to kendo, lacrosse and futsal. And, with over 70 societies to choose from, there’s something for everyone, Acapella and Dumbledore's Army to LGBT+ and Pokémon Go. Plus the Students’ Union will help you start your own society.

Freshers' week

We don’t have a freshers’ week – we have a freshers’ fortnight! From welcome BBQs to nights out, quizzes to walking tours, there’s plenty going on to help you make new friends, settle in and get ready for the adventures ahead.

Don’t miss our Freshers’ Fayre with loads of giveaways and societies and sports teams looking for new members.

History course doesn't provide a lot of flexibility in terms of the topics covered, feedback can vary in usefulness. Lecturers are mostly approachable and friendly. Decent employability team and opportunities for internships or extra training. The wellbeing and disability team are pretty good although there is often a huge waiting list for these services if you don't get in with them at the start. Francis Close Hall campus is gorgeous, and in a really good location close to town. Not much parking. Facilities are well kept and modern. Student union bar is fairly cheap and cosy, lots going on.

Really good service, especially the crisis worker, but long waiting lists can make it difficult if you need help imminently.

The campus and facilities are extremely good. The environment around the campus is relaxing and not too hectic. The campus is beautiful with a lot of wildlife and a small lake in the middle. Only downside about the facilities is that there was never any room in the library. It wasn't very big so you would have to turn up very early to get a seat. My course, Media Production was excellent in providing a variety of modules to study and I was able to learn a lot of valuable skills that I will be able to use in the industry after university. I was also able to apply for some work experience which gave me an idea of what it is like to work in the industry.

There were plenty of free events and clubs which students could attend if they did not have much money. I feel like all students from different background could be included in most things. LGBT students who were my friends always seemed happy and were included in everything. Were not seen as any different.

I know that these services were extremely helpful when my friends needed them. These services were always advertised and talked about often.

The facilities for disabled students seemed good. Easy access to all parts of the university.

The degree I am studying is quite complex due to the various amount of topics being covered however the the topics we cover in lectures are very interesting. The lecturers make the sessions very engaging and enjoyable with different teaching styles e.g. handouts, powerpoints, reading lists etc.
The assessment style for the degree is 100% coursework which i prefer due to my personal preference of not enjoying taking exams. All of the modules are assessed through essays but occasionally portfolios and presentations to help with different types of learners.

My degree is perfect for my lifestyle. Daily lectures lasting between 2 and 3 hours with lots of class interaction between the lecturer and students. The library is close by and the internal search system means I can check to see what books are in the library before I get there.

The course is fairly small with there being only about 25 of us in my year. I think this is one of the positives of the course as it means our lecturers know us all personally and when it comes to job opportunities outside of uni they know which students are more suited to what kind of jobs. The downside is that you are constantly working with the same groups of people which means that if there are people that you know don't pull their weight or that you don't for whatever reason get on with, you're still going to end up having to work with them.

The module has been very enjoyable. It has offered a range of teaching and I would recommend it to other people. The best bit about the module is the simulation, that changes how we learn. The module has been well thought out and has a lot of information within it. The lecturers are all friendly and helpful

I was very worried about this module due to it being independent research and completely dependent on the student. However the resources and lectures provided for this module helped me with choosing my topic and therefore a question and research that was feasible. Each lecture contained information about different aspects of the individual Research project. They were very informative and detailed. The lectures were taught very well by the lecturer as she made sure that she had our interest all the time by including us in discussions and asking questions.
