Overview

The University of Huddersfield is in a great central location with Leeds and Manchester only a quick train ride away. It has a reputation as one of the friendliest towns to live in and offers a relatively low cost of living. With almost 20,000 students there’s a thriving student community.

The University is recognised as a gold-rated University by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Based on the evidence available, the TEF Panel judged that the University delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students.

At Huddersfield, you’ll be taught by some of the best lecturers in the country. Huddersfield is first in England for professionally qualified teaching staff (HEFCE Dec 2016) and for the past nine years, Huddersfield has been the UK's leading university for the receipt of National Teaching Fellowships to mark Britain’s best lecturers in Higher Education.

Our student satisfaction score is 86.39% - higher than the national average (NSS, 2017).

Nightlife

Huddersfield has loads of options for a night out. From locally brewed ales to expertly prepared cocktails, there’s something to suit every mood.

The town is home to a range of independent bars as well as popular chains such as Revolution.

There are numerous live music venues across the town, from punk and rock bands to special DJ nights.

You can also party the night away at clubs such as Tokyo and Camel Club who have regular student deals.

Halls of residence

The University offers accommodation through DIGS Student, our preferred, recommended and approved accommodation provider. DIGS guarantees to find students a place in student accommodation and has two sites: Storthes Hall Park and Ashenhurst Houses. Prices start at £70 a week.

Storthes Hall Park is the largest student community in Huddersfield with over 1300 students. Facilities include a bar/cafe, cinema, gym and gaming room all in one location.

Location

The University is located on one campus, in the centre of a vibrant town. Student-friendly cafes, bars and restaurants are just a couple of minutes’ walk away. Huddersfield is set amid beautiful Yorkshire countryside and also has great rail and road connections.

The countryside offers plenty of outdoor pastimes and the town has a proud football and rugby heritage. There’s also plenty of culture to soak up including literary and music festivals.

Clubs and Societies

The Students’ Union is home to over 110 sports clubs and societies from American Football to mindfulness, there is even a range of Academic Societies to choose from or you can start your own!

Many of our Sports Clubs represent Huddersfield in national and regional leagues and each year we have Varsity, the SU’s biggest annual sports competition against local rivals, the University of Bradford with more than 2,000 students going to head-to-head.

Freshers' week

Freshers’ Week is full of activities. With something for everyone from HudCrawl to Feel Good Friday and of course Freshers’ Fair, where you can pick up freebies and meet Sports Clubs and Societies.

The perfect way to welcome you to Huddersfield is Give It A Go Week, giving you the chance to try an activity, Sports Club, Society or even a day trip to a UK attraction. It’s the best way to see what Huddersfield has to offer and meet new people.

Although I enjoyed my time at uni, the money just is not worth it. The facilities were excellent for Music Tech, you could rent out whatever you liked but the tutoring and the lectures are average at best and very disengaging. The university doesnt have a Student Union venue unfortunately and the nightlife is very samey but with not much option.

Lecturers only pay interest when it pleases them, never finish off the lesson and tend to go off topic a lot. Exam past papers and information gets left till the last minute.

Would be helpful if the university had a foundation year for this course for students who want/need to improve their skills which would benefit in specific course modules.

first year has been very hectic and eventful, which is a good thing as the course covers various aspects useful within the industry. Tutors have been supportive and encouraging throughout and do their best to be truthful/blunt which in a sense is positive as one is able to develop from critics. I have enjoyed learning new things and applying new experiences to enhance my skills which is evident within my work.

Course module review - Theory for Graphic Design, 23/05/2016

Theory for Graphic Design

As stated prior, this module has been the most difficult, because of the timing. In the first term, we spent 12 weeks researching for our other module, whilst having lectures on the theory module. There were very basic dissertation lectures giving background info, but not enough to know how to properly structure and layout the essay. The dissertation were then only allocated towards the end of that term and it was then we were encouraged to come up with our question.

History and Myth: Writing and Re-writing the Middle Ages

This module is about how the middle ages have been portrayed in literature and film, as well as looking at medieval literature, for example the ballad's of Robin Hood, working towards doing a pitch for either a film, television series or a computer game.

It incorporated research skills, as well as the creative skills, as you have to produce a resource survey which is linked to the pitch, as well as a pitch bible, which also involves producing a scene from the film, series or game.

All the technicians are very helpful. The studios stay open for longer hours when final years are present near deadlines which is very helpful. Sometimes feedback can be limited to a project which means it won't help you with future ones. Each project is different which allows you to gain a lot of different skills within the production side of fashion. There is always plenty of sewing machines however depending on the time or day, pattern cutting space is limited. There are also plenty of mannequins for both womens and menswear.
